I love this set of storage dishes. They do not take up much room in my limited cabinet space, since they all fit inside each other, and I LOVE the fact the lids lock together, so no more lids all over the place. I saw on another review that she had problems with tomato sauce staining the bowls. The way to stop that from happening is to spray a little non stick cooking spray into the bowl before you add the tomato based product. Viola! No more stains! I highly recommend this set!

I am very happy with the fit and finish of these containers. They work great for storing leftovers in the fridge and for taking food to work/school. However, I reheated some chicken chili in one of them without the lid using a microwave and after washing I noticed that where top of the chili reached that the plastic was etched. Almost like pitting. Visible enough that my grand mother noticed it and you could feel it by touch. It was literally the first time I microwaved one of the containers. FYI it was less than 3 minutes in an 1100 watt GE microwave oven.

So if you’re using these just for storing food, they’re excellent. HOWEVER, if you want to reheat that food, beware. You should switch to glassware like pyrex or stoneware.

I originally purchased these on a very cynical whim. My mom had tried the “bags” which failed miserably so when I ran across this set I really had very low hopes. Well, here are my results:

So far I’ve had the same blueberries in one of these containers for THREE WEEKS. I purchased and washed them on July 19th, the day before a dinner party, put them in a Produce Saver bowl and put them in the refrigerator. Some were eaten at the party, many weren’t. Today is August 10th and I guess I’m going to have to break down and make muffins with them or something because they’re as fresh and plump today as they were 3 weeks ago.

Grapes stay so fresh in the large container (I buy 2 big bags at a time now) that after a week even their stems are still green. The grapes themselves are crisp and cold.

My strawberries lasted for a week the last time before they were finally all eaten. Not sure how long they would hold up as they are pretty popular. I just wash them, drain them, de-stem them and pull out all of the already questionable berries, put them in a medium container (holds about 2 lbs of berries without stems), stuff them in the fridge and walk away. We are just able to reach in and snack on fresh berries whenever we want.

And a big one — tomatoes. Already sliced or diced tomatoes are nas-tay after they’ve been refrigerated overnight. I have stored diced tomatoes in the small bowl for a week and a half and they were just as tasty as the day I diced them. Not at all soggy and grainy.

Currently I have one of these sets and an extra medium bowl. It’s on my shopping list to get another set They’ve already saved me a fortune in fresh produce and I’ve only had them for about a month! My next experiment will be with bananas…. If my large bowl is ever empty long enough.

I use Rubbermaid containers the most due to price that allows for tossing when used over time. I prefer Lid Lock but reserved for storing dried goods instead of leftover. It does a great job storing leftover when I would rather not waste too many ziplock bags. Rubbermaid is microwavable but I would not recommend. Sometimes the microwaved food scrapes the base off Rubbermaid container and the container must be tossed. It’s mostly for storage, and if I need to microwave food, Luttonware is highly recommended.

Rubbermaid 1172 ActionPacker Storage Box, 24-Gallon Reviews

I have two of these boxes, both purchased from K-Mart several years apart, each one was 20 bucks. The first one I picked up in Tallahassee in 1993 to throw in the back of my pickup for extra storage. It is now 2006, some 13 years later, and that first box is still in great condition even after traveling thousands of miles all over the southeast in the back of four different pickups over the years. The only thing noticeable about the physical appearance of both boxes is the sun will quickly fade the red handles to a whitish-pink.

These are tough boxes, but for some reason hard to find in the store any more.

I most definitely recommend this box. I would be nice if it had wheels, though.

Update, 13 July 2008: these boxes are .99 at Wal-Mart! Also, one of my boxes has developed a slight leak. If it is in my truckbed and it is raining I might find water inside the box (not always, but it happens). I don’t know if it is because it is 15 years old….or because I was stupid enough to stand on it to change a lightbulb and bend it out of shape slightly with 200+ pounds of my weight.

I own four of these now, in addition to the slightly more expensive, slightly nice, possibly slightly toxic ones with the black tops. These nest into those ones just fine, and I like them both but save the 5 dollars and get these. These ones are slightly cheaper, so you won’t feel as bad beating them up, and there’s no chance of any toxicity coming from frequent dishwasher usages. These have a strong seal and they’re sturdy, I’ve been keeping a weekly veggie stock and tomato sauce in my fridge in large quantities and it keeps me from eating out. You can keep fresh lettuce or spinach or whatever leftovers you want in these. Just dedicate part of your lower rack of your refrigerator to the purpose. If it keeps you at home for one meal, you’ve recouped the cost of these containers.

Also, I own a lot of plastic storage, and I find I use the big ones the most. They’ll nest nicely, so I’d suggest just getting a few of these and see if they alter your cooking habits at all. They’re useful!

I purchased this for my daughter. She was very impressed with it stating that it worked for so many things and the Easy Find Lid wouldn’t be warping with it being stored so secure. Storing containers and lids can take up much needed room in a cupboard. These not only nest well but always have their lids with them.
