These spoons are as stated by Amazon. The review that says they ship 9 spoons isn’t true. The six dollar shipping on top of the cost makes these kind of expensive spoons. Quality is about what you would get anywhere. Good enough spoons.

As a serious amateur woodworker who has also studied the design and building of wooden boats, let me say that beechwood is by far one of the inferior materials one could choose for making wooden spoons. Olivewood is by far the superior material for this sort of common yet critical kitchen tool. Should you doubt this, please visit the kitchens of France, Italy and Spain to see what’s stirring the pot.

Additionally, fabricating the spoon by gluing multiple pieces together is a lesson in engineering failure. It violates the most basic principles of woodworking. Wood, because it is made by nature and not man is not uniform. Wood not only expands and contracts as it heats and cools, but also as it draws up moisture and dries. Multiple pieces equals multiple rates of expanding and contracting, working against the glued joint.

While Oxo makes and sells some very fine kitchen tools (I have a vegetable peeler by them that’s the best I’ve ever owned and it’s about a decade old), this is sure not among them.

Bought two spoons and within 2 months both had split along the glue lines. The spoons were hand washed. Get spoons but I can’t afford to replace them every two months.

I love using OXO’s lineup of wooden spoons. They are solid and comfortable to hold, and won’t scratch metal or nonstick cookware interiors. They are so very superior to those generic, cheap wooden spoons with thin handles that are uncomfortable to hold. This spoon is perfect for stirring sauces or sauteeing. With the exception of my knives, among my cooking tools, I use this spoon the most, along with the larger version.

Regarding the criticism of the spoon being made from two pieces of wood glued together – I think OXO has changed its manufacturing process for the better, because the spoon that I own is definitely made from one piece of wood. I would recommend this product to all home cooks and also suggest buying the large and small slotted spoons as well.

Tip: to protect your spoon from cracking, apply some food-grade mineral oil and rub it in all over. Apply once a month or so to keep the wood protected and to prevent it from drying out, and your spoon will last a long time.

I used this spoon one time, to stir a lasagna meat sauce I was making. Washed it. Dried it. Put it on the counter. Came out this morning to find that the spoon part had split, from the tip to about halfway into the spoon.

The three cheap wooden spoons I bought for .00 (for all three, combined) at the grocery store are still working just fine. While this spoon looks great, I absolutely would never buy it again.

Extremely disappointed. I thought with the Paula Deen name I would be purchasing some quality spoons. A chunk of the small spoon came off almost immediately and the larger spoon has split up the middle. Terrible.

I couldn’t be more pleased than I am with these craftsman style spoons. Beautiful unfinished wood and heavy duty copper hook. Their carved forms are gererously thick giving a substantial amount of leverage for mixing. I wanted these to mix bread dough and they are perfectly suited.

I purchased one of these some 13 years ago or so, and it would still be going strong, if it had not been washed in a dishwasher before I learned that you don’t put wood items in a dishwasher. That caused a split in the bowl of the spoon, but it still worked, split and all, for another 10 years, until recently, when I whacked it hard on another object in a foolish display of frustration, and it broke along the split.

What sets this spoon apart, is that it has an actual bowl that holds enough of something to taste or dish. Other wooden spoons, aside from being made of cheap materials like pine, that just will not stand up to heat and moisture, are also good for nothing but use as a stir stick, because they have such a flat shallow bowl, that you can’t ‘spoon’ anything with them.

The beech wood as well as the shape and dimension, made this a winning design in my book.

So I am getting another just like it, this time never to place in the dishwasher, and this time, hopefully, to refrain from unseemly tantrums.

Make no mistake….this is not a spoon for the faint of heart. This is a BIG, thick, (probably as round, in diameter, as the widest part of my longest finger of my hand) spoon. But, it is exactly what I was looking for. I am well satisfied with this purchase and it took me a while to find it and when I was just about to give up on my quest, I decided to “try Amazon.com” and sure enough, there it was. For me, it’s a keeper.

I recently bought several wooden spoons and utensils. Of all of them this seems to be the most functional. I love the groove cut into the handle. The flat head design makes it easy to stir up the bottom of the pan or pot. The wood used is very nice also, and it is a pretty spoon, especially for the price. Only the olive wood is more attactive to me. I would highly recommend this product. It would be a great first wooded utensil if you had to choose just one. Great quality for the price.

A 1/3 inch split developed in the wood on the spoon’s flat edge after about five uses(I hand wash and dry promptly). The same thing happened to the replacement Amazon sent. Amazon-Great!! Mario Batali- not so great.

Sometime I struggle about product reviews. Not so much about how to describe them, but how to rate them in term of numbers of star. Should a superb wooden spoon be rated higher than a mediocre spoon? (As a matter of fact, I do have a wood spoon and have seen wood spoons cost more than a piece) Ultimately, I examine my overall attitude toward the purchase, so I do consider both the cost and the quality of the products.

This utensil set was sold for .99 and I bought it as part of the 4-for-3 promotion, so I paid less than for three wooden utensils — extremely affordable. In term of quality, they don’t seem to be as good as the ones sold by Oxo, but the Oxo ones are more expensive. Of the three utensils, the slotted spoon is of the poorer quality (in my case anyway). The slotted spoon is made of rougher and porous wood. It cracked slightly (1/8th inch) after its first use. It has “healed” itself after contraction. I have only used it once since and it has not cracked the second time. I simply don’t have the need for the slotted spoon often and have not tried it often. The solid spoon is nice. It has not cracked or splintered. In fact, the solid spoon has survived the break-in period and developed a very smooth surface. The turner is mostly used for sautee and stir-fry, so it has not seen much water and of course has not cracked or splintered. The solid spoon is 10-3/4″ in length. The slotted spoon and turner are 11-1/2″ in length. I have owed this set since March, 2009 and am updating this review on Dec, 2009.

On quality alone, I would only give this Calphalon wood utensil set a 3-star score because the wood quality is average (average as in average, not average as in bad). As a whole, I am giving it a 4-star rating because it is very affordable.

For disclosure, all three utensils have been treated with mineral oil, beeswax or tung oil before their first use.

This is defiantly a nice set of wooden utensils, although I expected them to be larger for some reason. I guess I had that pictured in my head from ones that I have seen in the stores. I like this set because it is hard to find the spoons that are curved in as much as they are and you do not normally find the flat utensil without slits. Nice set. I look forward to using these more in my new cookwares set!

I first thought for a spoon??!! But ordered it anyway because it looked good and sturdy. The spoon proved to be worth every penny!!! Its very sturdy and convenient to stir large quantities of food. It works great especially when stirring sticky stuff, since its very strong. I haven’t used any other spoon while cooking since I bought this. Highly recommend this.

I’ve used this maybe five times since purchased about a month ago and it has developed a crack in the spoon. It hasn’t been left in water to soak, it has only been hand washed. The crack will break completely very soon.

I had high hopes for this spoon, as it was a favorite of America’s Test Kitchen. The first time I used it, it developed a fine crack that became a gaping wound within a few more uses. I never soaked the spoon or left it in the pot. Needless to say, I had to throw it away. What a complete waste of money!
