The Soup Peddler’s Slow and Difficult Soups: Recipes and Reveries
With just a custom-made yellow bike, a used bike trailer, and a few two-quart containers of homemade gumbo, David Ansel began peddling soup to his friends and neighbors in the close-knit community of Bouldin Creek in Austin, Texas. Many flat tires and gallons of soup later, his delivery route has grown from 17 soup subscribers, or “soupies,” to more than 700 and counting. In SLOW AND DIFFICULT SOUPS, Ansel (aka the Soup Peddler) ladles out generous bowlfuls of some of the most delicious and lovingly seasoned soups you’ll ever taste. This heart-and belly-warming illustrated memoir is an offbeat homage to the art, science, and joy of soup, offering a utopian vision of a community brought together through their love of spoon-licking comfort food. The Soup Peddler shares humorous stories about the eccentric folks who populate Bouldin Creek, along with classic and exotic creations like South Austin Chili, Smoked Tomato Bisque,Chompy-Chomp Black Bean Soup, and Bouillabaisse Marseillaise. A taste of simpler times in our modern fast-food nation, SLOW AND DIFFICULT SOUPS is a rousing reminder of our basic need to connect to our food —and those who cook, deliver, and slurp it.

The Soup Peddler’s Slow and Difficult Soups: Recipes and Reveries Reviews

David’s writing is almost better than his soup. I notice this everytime I read something of his, whether the weekly Soupie email, article or something else. He beautifully brings to life the South Austin scene, and does it without condescending, something non-Texans seem hard-pressed to avoid. In fact, his love for the landscape and people in his adopted home comes through in every paragraph. For this, for his soup, for his talent with the written word, I am eternally grateful.

This book is a rare treasure that brings together love for good food and a contagious love for life. I don’t consider myself a cook, but the Soup Peddler makes it so easy, you can’t miss. You’ll be glad you bought this book, and so will all the people who get to share your soup!

The Best Recipe: Soups & Stews
The Test Cooks at Cook’s Illustrated, America’s Test Kitchen, simmered enough chicken soup, beef stew and corn chowder to feed a small city– the result? More than 200 exhaustively tested recipes and hand-drawn illustrations, kitchen equipment tests and blind food tastings that share our discoveries of the undisputed best ways to make America’s favorite soups and stews. 3rd title in “The Best Recipe” series.Everyone loves soups and stews–but how best to prepare these sometimes challenging dishes? The Best Recipe: Soups & Stews, part of the Best Recipe series from the editors of Cook’s Illustrated magazine, has the answer. Applying its signature “trial and error” approach to the business of choosing definitive recipes and techniques, the magazine tested 23 noodle soups, 40 corn chowders, and 54 beef Burgundies. The results? Not only 200 exemplary recipes–ranging from Manhattan Clam Chowder and Cream of Tomato Soup to Lobster Bisques, Chicken Noodle Soup, Irish Stew, and Beef Goulash–but an armament of technical information, tips, and equipment recommendations all cooks will welcome. Among these are authoritative stock-making suggestions, keys to choosing tender stew meat, and recommendations that yield a superior crust for onion soup. Readers also learn why blender jars with interior flutes produce the best purées, which brand of matzo meal to choose, and how best to crush tomatoes and slice flank steak. The book also covers accompaniments such as baguettes, mashed potatoes, rice, and cornbread. With ingredient profiles, “Science” sidebars (How Starches Work, is one), plus step-by-step how-to illustrations, Soups & Stews will help all cooks achieve mastery of these beloved dishes –Arthur Boehm

The Best Recipe: Soups & Stews Reviews

The Best Recipe books have an interesting perspective on cooking and cookbooks. Resolutely scientific, recipes are developed in their test kitchens according to methodical experimentation — you get not only the best recipe, but insight into the variations of the recipe that failed. This makes for interesting reading, and highlights many practical errors and pitfalls that spoil a good clam chowder or weaken a chicken paprikash. For example, they put to test the idea that beef bourguignon is only as good as the wine used in the cooking. (The answer, sadly, is yes — good wine makes better beef bourguignon.) In many places, this puts them at odds with staunch traditionalists, advocating, for example, the use of canned stock in certain dishes (which is tantamount for many cooks to a heresy). The systematic approach might then threaten the art of cooking, while advocating a new scientific approach, but the results in my experience (not only this book but also from cooking illustrated from which the recipes are drawn) tend to be quite good — and like any good scientific result, reliable. It is worth noting that because of this detailed approach to classic dishes as problems that must be solved, there are relatively few recipes in the book relative to its length. I enjoy the reports, though they might put off someone looking for straightforward recipes.

If you are not familiar with Cook’s Illustrated magazine, you are in for a real treat! Every recipe I have made from their magazine, and now from this cookbook is perfect. When I was looking for a good soup and stew cookbook and I saw this one, I knew it would be the one to have. They try and retry recipes dozens of different ways until they hit upon the perfect method, perfect ingredients; and I swear, they come up with the perfect recipe. And at times, it isn’t so much the ingredients as the methods that make the dish so good – little tips such as adding flour to the pan after the meat has been sauteed in the Beef Stroganoff recipe instead of flouring the beef. They even tell you how wide to slice the beef – and believe it or not, all these little tips add up to the perfect dish. No matter how many times I’ve made something, when I tried their recipe, it was better than the way I had been making it. The chicken stews alone are worth the price of the book.

The Big Book of Soups and Stews: 262 Recipes for Serious Comfort Food Reviews

I’ve made at least ten of the recipes so far, from lamb stew with spinach and orzo to spicy black bean to lentil with brown rice, and every one has been tasty and straightforward to make, including the vegetarian ones. I cook once or twice a week and eat each dish for several days, so this kind of consistency is important! Note that these are generally not quick recipes in the sense of being able to whip them up on the spot – most I’ve tried involve throwing things in the pot to simmer at least an hour or two before I intend to eat, and many suggest soaking beans overnight, etc. But the time spent actively preparing the food is usually not that much, and the results have always been well worth it. Enjoy!

I love soup, but I don’t like to spend all day making it. Maryana has “boiled down” every recipe to the simplest yet tastiest way to make it. Try the Sunriver Soup for company…it is delicious. I have had this book for over a year, and have made over 20 of the recipes…they have all been fantastic. Both of the Gumbo recipes are super, the seafood one is divine. The Gazpacho is perfect, and I love the Mexican Chicken and Corn soup too. I like how she doesn’t require a million and one ingredients but just selects the perfect combination of spices for each soup.

Pretend Soup and Other Real Recipes: A Cookbook for Preschoolers and Up
A Cookbook for Preschoolers & Up Together with her co-author, educator Ann Henderson, cookbook author Mollie Katzen believes it’s never too early to introduce children to the creative world of cookery in a fun, healthful way. For small children, exploring food and cooking is not just about eating, it can be a playful activity and a way to learn new skills. As an educational experience, consider all the things a child can learn in the kitchen: counting, symbol recognition, reading readiness, self-confidence, use of tools, food literacy, and more. Pretend Soup brings the grown-up world of real cooking to a child’s level. Each vegetarian recipe is presented on double-page spreads, two per recipe. Full of Mollie’s well-loved warmth and whimsical artistry, the first spread details the ingredients, safety tips, and a familiar version of the recipe for the prep cook: the adult. The second spread presents the recipe pictorally for the child and introduces a few easy-to-read words – your child moves from the usual role of helper to head cook.Pretend Soup has rapidly become the children’s cookbook classic, and no home or daycare center should be without a copy. Mollie Katzen, author of the Moosewood Cookbook, and educator Ann Henderson have created a masterpiece formatted for grown-ups–with written instructions, suggestions, and caveats–and for kids–with illustrated, easy-to-follow pictures. The recipes are both tasty and healthy, and the quotes from kids are very funny (Matthew: “This is so good, I can’t even say a word.”) While safety is stressed and tips and warnings are included, Katzen and Henderson always stress the fun in food preparation. “Spills are what sponges are for. So keep plenty of sponges around, and a good time will be had by

Pretend Soup and Other Real Recipes: A Cookbook for Preschoolers and Up Reviews

My daughter is only 3, but she participates a lot in these recipies. Lots of fun.The names they give the foods and the pictures also make children more willing to eat the food. If you have a picky eater he/she will surely eat the creations from this book.I appreciate that they didnt use a lot of fancy ingreadiants or get too rediculous with cutting things into shapes etc. like many kid’s recipie booksThe hide-and-seek muffins are awsome! they taste like shortcake w/ the strawberry baked right in!

What a find! Mollie Katzen and Ann Henderson have compiled a delicious assortment of fun-to-make recipes for kids. My daughter was THRILLED to be able to make and serve Blueberry Pancakes for Sunday breakfast. The experience was a terrific boost for her. You could virtually see her self-esteem growing as she presented her culinary masterpiece to us. She also made chocolate-banana shakes for dessert last night. The recipes are so well illustrated that she is able (at 4 and a half years old) to verify that she has included all of the ingredients. She is eagerly anticipating her next cooking adventure. I tip my chef’s hat to the authors for combining real food with recipes that are truly suited for kids. Does anyone know if the Culinary Institute of America offers scholarships? I think she’s ready!

Many of the proffered soups have a theme or flavor meant for the different seasons of the year. Featuring easy-to-prepare vegetarian (and many vegan!) soups for almost every occasion, “Love Soup” is enthusiastically recommended for vegetarian and vegan cooks everywhere.

I have lots of cookbooks sitting on the shelf gathering dust – but not this one. I’ve already used it 3 times in as many weeks, and as the weather gets colder I anticipate trying more recipes.
There’s a whole chapter on “green soups” that use those dark leafy greens the nutritionists are always urging us to eat (unsuccessfully in my case). In my first attempt vast quantities of kale and spinach almost overflowed the soup pot, but after being cooked down and pureed with seasonings the greens were transformed into a delicious soup that was creamy without the need for butter or cream. It was so good I made it two weeks in a row.
Next I made the zucchini basil soup which uses a full 2 cups of basil to 2 pounds of zucchini – easy and delicious.

Mollie Katzen’s Recipes: Soups: Easel Edition Reviews

Mollie Katzen’s Recipes: Soups is produced in an interesting format. It’s a small ring-bound book tucked into a board sleeve so it’ll sit well on a shelf. Once you take the book out, you move a couple of things around, tuck one thing into another, and you end up with an easel. The idea is that you set it up so it only takes up a few inches of counter-space and your recipe ends up standing up in front of you, making it easy to read while you cook.
In this it works fairly well. The angle is fairly steep, so you’ll need to set it down on a perfectly level surface or risk pages falling closed on you. I also felt that this worked better for cooking than for looking through the cookbook to find recipes, which was a bit more awkward. And once you’ve set it up as an easel, it’ll never quite collapse back all the way again; while you can slip it into its sleeve to fit on a shelf, at least, it’s still a bit awkward to work with in other ways. Other folks might find this format perfect; it just didn’t quite work for me.
The handwriting font is attractive, but when it comes to cookbooks my personal preference is for something plain and clear. There are no photos, but I tend to think photos are pretty unnecessary with soups. The directions are clear and simple; these are not overly complex recipes.
The table of contents and index are quite handy; the ToC lists recipes in order, while the index lets you look for things by ingredient, both of which are useful.
It seemed to me that the flavors in these soups weren’t balanced entirely well. Some seemed under-seasoned while others seemed over-seasoned. The spices in the curried squash soup smelled to-die-for while cooking, but the soup was flavored strongly enough that I found it a bit unpleasant, and that’s unusual for me (I’m a flavor junkie!). I also found some of the soups didn’t reheat very well (without mentioning this in the directions), which is a tad unusual for soups.
The soups aren’t vegan, as a number of them use dairy, but it would be simple enough to substitute soy products and the like.
If you’re die-hard looking for a source of healthy, vegetarian soups, this is certainly a good option. As a cookbook in general, however, I’d say it’s good but not great. On the other hand, many of the things I wasn’t so fond of will be taste-dependent.

Taste of Home: Casseroles, Slow Cooker, and Soups: Casseroles, Slow Cooker, and Soups: 536 Family Pleasing Recipes Reviews

There’s a little something for every family member in the cookbook. My only complaint is some of the “Crock Pot” recipes really aren’t for the Crock Pot. You only heat the finished product in the Crock Pot for a short time. Otherwise, a great cookbook!

THIS COOKBOOK IS ONE OF THE BEST EVER. MOST COOKBOOKS HAVE A FEW GOOD RECIPES, BUT THIS TASTE OF HOME COOKBOOK IS FULL OF GREAT RECIPES YOU CAN’T WAIT TO MAKE. I ENJOYED IT SO WELL I BOUGHT ONE FOR MY MOM WHO ENJOYS USING RECIPES FOR HER CROCKPOT.
