Southern Living Our Best Christmas Recipes Reviews

This is the one cookbook in my collection (of at least 50 others) that gets the most usage! I loved it so much that I gave this cookbook as a gift to my sister (a caterer) and aunt (who entertains quite a bit)! This is by far my FAVORITE cookbook(and theirs)! The recipes are easy to follow and well laid out. They offer many different meal plan suggestions and the ingredients are easy to find. The Chocolate Mousse Au Grand Marnier is sinfully delicious! Everything that the three of us have made from this cookbook receives RAVE reviews! (i.e. Chicken Alouette, Make-Ahead Mashed Potatoes, Holiday Banana Bread, Streusel-Topped Sweet Pototo Casserole, Mushroom Roll-ups, etc.)

Every recipe I have tried from this cookbook is wonderful. The make-ahead mashed potatoes are yummy and a time-saver. I use this cookbook exclusively for my Thanksgiving and Christmas meals.

Christmas Cookies: 50 Recipes to Treasure for the Holiday Season Reviews

Lisa Zwirn’s book, Christmas Cookies: 50 Recipes to Treasure for the Holiday Season, is a wonderful addition to my collection of cookbooks. This attractive, beautifully photographed cookbook is filled with recipes of delicious treats your family and friends will truly enjoy.
My family adores chocloate desserts of almost any kind, but I ventured out of the norm and tried the author’s heavenly Lemon Squares. They were absoultley wonderful, full of intense flavor with a moist, tasty crust. The Coconut Macaroons, dipped in Chocolate is another delightful sweet. They were moist, chewy and very simple to create. A co-worker borrowed my cookbook and chose to make the Apricot Almond Bars. She brought these fruity, chewy almond bars into the office for everyone to enjoy and we devoured them in a day.
I’ve given this gem of a cookbook to several friends and family members last holiday season and I received wonderful feedback.
For the upcoming holiday season I look forward to trying numerous new recipes from Lisa Zwirn’s superb cookbook. I highly recommend this appealing, well-written holiday treasure.

Good Housekeeping The Great Christmas Cookie Swap Cookbook: 60 Large-Batch Recipes to Bake and Share Reviews

This book is the “go to” for all things cookie swap. Not only does the book give you tips for how to organize and host a cookie swap but the book also gives you great tips on baking the best cookies at the swap!
The book is a very manageable 5×7. It is spiral bound and lays flat for easier reading when cooking (I love these kinds of considerations). I would like to have seem more photos included with the recipes but they did write the recipes “large-batch” to make cooking and giving easier (another great consideration).
It is no secret that I can’t bake. Cooking yes, Baking no. There is a difference! From now on when I get invited to a cookie swap, I am going to use this book and cook all the delights: Coconut Macaroons, Cinnamon Spirals and Nut Cresents. I will have those “cookie swap church ladies” swooning with cookie envy!
This would make a great stocking stuffer or better yet, a great addition to a gift basket. Just add the book with a batch of cookies in a cute basket – all tied up in a bow. Perfect!

The Great Christmas Cookie Swap Cookbook is a book with a very specific purpose. While reading it I would sometimes forget its singular job and wonder why a cookie recipe required FOUR pounds of butter — a necessity when making multiple batches. It was disconcerting and amusing.
The vast majority of the sixty recipes are standard cookie recipes that would be expected fare at a cookie swap – Peanut Butter Cookies, Classic Sugar Cookies, Drop Sugar Cookies, Sour Cream Sugar Cookies, Coconut Macaroons, Almond Macaroons, Scottish Shortbread, Snickerdoodles, Mexican Wedding Cookies, etc. Although most of the recipes are old favorites, the Good Housekeeping editors did sprinkle a few interesting cookies and variations that would be standouts at any cookie swap – like Praline-Topped Brownies (which I prepared and are quite delicious), Finska Kakor (which were also great) and Apricot Raspberry Rugelach – a rugelach combination I had not tried and the result was terrific.
This is a solid cookbook but geared toward the cook that does not have many or any cookie cookbooks, because 95 percent of the recipes would be found in any basic cookie volume. The book’s selling point is the convenience of having the large batch calculations done for you. Of course, doubling, tripling or quadrupling recipes really doesn’t require much effort –but if the reader has serious time constraints — and, there are many people in precisely such a position — this cookbook may fill a void.
The book is attractive, easy to read (small font size but dark ink), easy to use (spiral bound) and the finish on the pages should make any spills or splashes easy to clean up. Fully a third of the book is 4 1/2 by 7 inch blank recipe cards – a blast from the past when computers were not used to print out and share recipes. I’m not sure most of us have time to write out recipes by hand to share at a cookie swap. The quantity of recipe cards also somewhat distorts the size of the book, which would have been a much slimmer volume without their inclusion. Rather than blank recipe cards, more cookie recipes would have added greatly to the book.
There are photographs of most of the cookies, but not all. There are a number of captioned group pictures of three or four different cookies, which is a fine and economical way to handle it, but also added to my annoyance that every cookie variation isn’t shown. Publishers of cookbooks need to stop viewing illustrations as optional. Sometimes I will see a picture of a cookie, find its appearance less than attractive, and decide on that basis alone to skip it. If the cookie is for family or children it isn’t so important, but for a party or bake sale it takes on greater significance.
This book isn’t for everyone, but it is festive and would be a nice gift for a novice baker, a cookbook collector or any harried soul with no time to add two and two together.

My son (now
I subscribe to the Family Fun magazine which I truly love. When I saw they had a cook book I had to get it as fast as I could point and click. We use the recipes all of the time. It is our weekend project to bake something. I think cooking has so many values that it teaches children. Measuring, fractions, goal setting, completing a project and a great reward. A lot of the recipes I already have but how many different variations can there be? The pictures are great and the ideas I got from this book have made the money well spent.

Jeanne Bice’s Quacker Factory Christmas: Simple Recipes, Fabulous Parties & Decorations to Put Sparkle, Not Stress into Your Season (The Quacker Factory) Reviews

I’ve read this book a couple of times now, and I’m still finding stuff I missed. I’ve also used several of the cookie recipes, and made a couple of the drinks (peppermint patty martini’s are great!) and everything is easy and do-able. I really like Jeanne’s philosophy on life, and I strive to apply her principals to my life also. Jeanne hasn’t had an easy life, and she has worked really hard to get where she is in life, and she gives me hope and inspiration. I recommend this book!

Gifts to get, make, and wrap; decorating tips and Food! Food! Glorious Christmas Food! But don’t eat it all, or you’ll have to buy new Quacker clothes in a bigger size after the holidaze. Or maybe that’s Jeanne’s plot Written the way this popular hostess on That TV Shopping Channel talks (I can hear her speaking as I read. Or maybe the voice in my head is due to too many of her luscious and lascivious Peppermint Patty martinis and my over-cookied carbohydrate haze) and containing fun flashbacks of her growing up in Wisconsin,(Beer/Cheese biscuits!) this (at least mine is – I got the signed, hard-cover edition from QVC) beautiful color glossy book is sure to lessen your stress and defrazzle your holiday dazzle!

Delia Smith’s Christmas: 130 Recipes for Christmas Reviews

Wonderful recipes for any time, but particularly Christmas. I enjoyed Delia’s mincemeat strudle at an English friend’s house, made with Delia’s delicious mincemeat recipe – not at all like the ghastly, oversweet stuff you buy in jars. Just had to order a book for myself.

I guess Delia is very well known in the UK – maybe like Julia in the USA. I discovered her thru a forum on line. What a piece of good luck. I have now made several of her recipes and enjoyed success from compliments and second helpings. I like her companionable way of writing instructions and tips
