Allergy Proof Recipes for Kids: More Than 150 Recipes That are All Wheat-Free, Gluten-Free, Nut-Free, Egg-Free and Low in Sugar Reviews

Review by Oregon City:
Great cookbook! I have been cooking allergy free for my son for approx 2 years now. He is allergic to eggs, soy, dairy, wheat and tree nuts. It is hard to find a cookbook that is sensitive to all of the top 8 allergens. This one does, with the exception of just a couple of recipes. I purchased this cookbook to find some new ideas. I have started to notice that the varying cookbooks tend to rely on one specific type of gluten free flour. This one is rice flours and tapioca flours which can have a little grittier taste. The last cookbook I used it was oat flour (Sophie Safe) and those recipes tend to crumble. It is nice to have a few new recipes and to try new ingredients to see which ones work for you. I still love Sophie Safe, but am enjoying this cookbook just as much! If you cook for someone with allergies, you know how challenging it can be. I would recommend this cookbook highly!! Good luck!!

Kid Favorites Made Healthy (Better Homes and Gardens): 150 Delicious Recipes Kids Can’t Resist (Better Homes & Gardens Cooking) Reviews

Review by Bethany:
I think a more appropriate name for this book would be, “Kid Favorites Made Healthier”. I was a bit disappointed at the lack of vegetable dishes… or at least ones my family would eat. Having said that, I have actually used this book a lot. The recipes are simple and easily adaptable, for example, I’ll use whole grain pastas and tortillas instead of the regular “white” ones called for in the recipes. There are pictures of most of the recipes which is always nice. Potential purchasers should be aware that many of the dishes use store-bought time-savers which was a plus for me but may be a turn-off for others. All in all, a good cookbook with good recipes… not great, but there are some real gems that make it worth the purchase.

Review by Kristin Haws:
This cookbook delivers what the title says: Kid Favorites Made Healthy. So if you want to make healthier chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, chili, tacos, banana bread, etc., then this cookbook is a great choice. I was looking more for full menu ideas that would appeal to my 7 and 4 year olds. There is one chapter for Dinner, and one for kid-friendly vegetables, but the rest are breakfast, snacks, lunch, desserts, and party ideas – not what I needed. If you have an overweight child, or are worried that one is heading in that direction, then you should get this. Tasty recipes made healthy, and exercise and nutrition info too!

Real Food for Healthy Kids: 200+ Easy, Wholesome Recipes Reviews

Review by M. Wade:
I ignored the few negative reviews for this recipe book, and bought it anyway…especially since it had so many glowing reviews. And the authors seemed exceptionally accomplished. But it isn’t the recipe book for me.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to describe exactly what’s wrong with the book or exactly why I don’t like it. No one thing is a killer, but, as a whole, I found the book disappointing. Here are some of my thoughts:

1. No pictures at all. None. Zip. And I just don’t like recipe books that don’t include photos.

2. The organization is kind of trying. The onion dip recipe is listed in the “snack attack” section. Sesame sauce is under “lunch,” and Teriyaki Vinaigrette is under “dinner.” It would have been easier for me if those had been listed as “sauces” or listed as part of a recipe for a full-blown dish.

3. You could find better versions of most of these recipes in adult cook books. I already have a recipe for Caesar salad, for example. And this book doesn’t offer a new take on the salad at all, except to title it with a snazzy kid name: Hail Caesar, Jr.

4. The snazzy kid names are annoying to me, especially since they don’t end up being very descriptive. “Squish Squash,” for example, is just a simple mashed butternut squash. It’s a fine name once you know what the dish is, but you have to read through the ingredients to figure out what the dish is going to be like. With more complicated recipes that is a bit of a task because, as I mentioned before…no photos.

5. They spend a lot of time on drink and dessert recipes.

6. They spend very little time on side dishes or vegetables, and most of the vegetable sides they offer are either potato heavy or extremely basic, such as roasted asparagus, which is…(wait for it)…roasted asparagus, in olive oil with salt and pepper. I don’t need a recipe book for things like that. I can come up with salt and pepper on my own.

7. They don’t offer much in the way of serving suggestions. They’ll give you the recipe for pineapple pork, but they won’t give you any ideas of what to serve it with, which makes the lack of veggie recipes more painful.

The recipes themselves seem OK. I like roasted asparagus, and mashed butternut squash…and Caesar salad. So it’s fine. But overall I found this book to aimed at someone other than me. If you’re already into food at all, this probably isn’t the book for you. I didn’t find anything very original or insightful in this book, and I found many things kind of confusing (why is canned pumpkin is a necessity for a well-stocked pantry? I only use pumpkin a few times a year, and I usually just use real pumpkin–or I buy a can for the specific recipe. I don’t know).

Review by Jules:
My kids and I love this cookbook. the recipes are delicious and easy to make. Kids do NOT need to only eat pasta and PB & J’s. if you expose them to healthy flavorful foods early on they’ll have a sophisticated pallet for life. My mother always cooked us whatever she liked and we loved it too. the recipes in this book are good for everyone in the family. This way everyone can eat together – as they should!!!

My A to Z Recipe Box: An Alphabet of Recipes for Kids Reviews

Review by Suzanne:
This recipe box is incredible. I purchased it for my 6yr old for her birthday along with an apron and kid oven mits. We have only done 5 recipes so far but all of them are very good, pretty healthy and most of all – fun and easy for kids. My daughter begs at least 3-4x a week to make a new recipe and hasn’t let up. The premade recipe cards aren’t laminated but they are made of wipable material similar to board books which is nice. There is one for each letter of the alphabet and they act as the divider for each letter once you add additional recipes. She can read them herself and does about 90% of the recipe on her own. They are not too simple or basic like sandwiches or chocolate chip cookies but aren’t anything extensive and time consuming either. There are appetizers, breakfast lunch and dinner items and of course desserts! Some examples are: vegetable soup, lemon hummus dip, blueberry cobbler, cheese fondue in a bread bowl, whole wheat baked soft pretzels, honey cookies, zucchini sticks, “surprise” muffins, johnny cakes, cheesy mac and cheese etc… The extra cards (26 of them) are made of thick stock paper. Once we start adding recipes onto them, I will laminate them myself so they survive longer. Even though I love the idea of adding your own recipes, I truly hope there is an option in the future to add more premade recipes. The cards each have fun facts, variations of the recipe and cute pictures. This is available at in store at Pottery Barn Kids. Great birthday present to give to kids ages 5-10. Highly recommend!

Review by E. Rizzo:
Yummy recipes, easy-to-follow instructions, cute illustrations, all wrapped up in a nifty recipe card box. The recipes are fun and healthy versions of foods kids like to eat. I have three kids and try very hard to encourage them to eat nutritious foods — versions of old favorites like Cheese-iest Cheese and Macaroni and Nifty Asian Noodles make it a lot easier to ensure that they are eating healthily and having fun too! My kids enjoy cooking and they love eating the foods they prepare. Now, I just need to teach them to do the dishes and I will be able to take the night off!

Southern Living: Kids Cookbook: 124 Recipes Kids Will Love to Make and Love to Eat (Southern Living (Hardcover Oxmoor)) Reviews

Review by archaeoamy:
I went to Border’s to look at all the kids’ cookbooks because I really wanted to see them in person before I purchased one. Of about the ten I looked at, this one was the best for my kids (ages 4/6/8). The format is very clear and easy to read, the pages/pictures are non-cluttered, the book is hard-covered/spiral-bound (big plus!) and the recipes were very interesting with a good mixture of every-day vs. unique foods (I want my kids to learn how to make foods other than grilled-cheese sandwiches and pancakes). The others had one or two of the above, but this one by far was the best. So this is the one I’m purchasing (and it’s cheaper on amazon).

Review by Broc Parson:
This book is full of great recipes and excellent photos. The ideas are unique and practical – things that we would actually make and eat. I have a lot of kid’s cookbooks and this is my favorite.

The Kids-Did-It! Cookie Bookie: A (fun) cookie-baking cookbook for kids, illustrated by kids! (Volume 1) Reviews

Review by Elizabeth Ganji:
I received this cookie bookie as a gift and have been raving about it ever since. Not only are the recipes fun, creative, and kid-friendly, the illustrations throughout the book were created by children! It is amazing the quality of art these children have produced, and I find myself thumbing through it repeatedly enjoying the vibrant color and cute designs the kids have come up with.

I plan to buy several more and attach them to baked goodies for Christmas presents this year for my friends with little ones. Will continue to be a great project for our rainy Northwest winters in the years to come! Highly recommend this book.

Incredible Edible Gluten-Free Food for Kids: 150 Family-Tested Recipes

Serving foods that are appetising is no easy task for the parent of a child on a gluten-free diet due to condition such as celiac disease. Forbidden foods — wheat, rye, oats, and barley — pervade most recipes and food labels are not always clearly marked. This cookbook, however, can save families time, money, and anguish by providing clear guidelines for selecting ingredients and preparing food safely. But best of all, this is the first cookbook to provide delectable gluten-free recipes formulated especially for children. The rest of the family will want to try them, too. In addition to food recipes, there are tips for cooking substitution, entertaining, a list of resources, as well as a detailed trouble-shooting chart for the gluten-free baker. Sanderson also offers advice on how to deal with situations outside the home that may compromise a child’s diet, such as peer-pressure and day care.

Incredible Edible Gluten-Free Food for Kids: 150 Family-Tested Recipes Reviews

Review by :
I have a 4-year-old with celiac disease, so I was excited about this book. Unfortunately, when it arrived I discovered that the recipes didn’t offer me as many new and different things to try as I had hoped. (I already own 4 other gluten-free cookbooks.) I tried the Breakast Muffin recipe. It was okay. Nothing special. If you don’t own any gluten-free cookbooks already, this one may be good for you. Two things really bothered me. First the bread machine recipes never stated the size loaf you were making. I assume 2lb, but that’s important info to leave out. Second, I felt that some recipes were included just to fill pages. One page is a recipe for a baked potato. The resources in the back are quite helpful, but you could easily find them other places.

Review by Shannon Parrish:
When I found out my 3 year old twins were gluten intolerant, I had no idea what to do or where to start. This book offered a wealth of information not only about recipes, but information on the disease as well as excellent resources. Sheri’s recipes offered me time saving, excellent recipes to offer my kids. It was nice to have recipes that were already family tested. I was busy enough chasing my twins and entertaining my 6 year old daughter at the time. Not only did my 6 year old prefer the gluten free breads listed in this book over regular store bought bread, but I have had company (not gluten intolerant) tell me the bread was excellent and asked for more! Just last week my sister was here from out of town and I had to ask her to save it for my boys! I specifically like the rice tapioca bread, breakfast muffins, and the chicken with dijon sauce. Another thing I am thankful for is the recipe for gluten free play dough. My kids were able to go to preschool and play with play dough! I didn’t have to worry about them getting ill from the other play dough the school provided. Most importantly, they didn’t feel left out by not being allowed to play with the schools play dough. I would highly recommend this book to any family, even adult gluten intolerant individuals who want to save time, money, and heartache.

Quick Meals for Healthy Kids and Busy Parents: Wholesome Family Recipes in 30 Minutes or Less From Three Leading Child Nutrition Experts Reviews

Review by Wendy:
I must admit I’m a cook book junkie–always at the library and book stores looking for healthy, “kid-friendly” recipes. I purchased this book on a whim five years ago, and would rate it my all time favorite “family” cookbook. Recipes are in chapters: Soups, Chicken & Fish, Ground Beef (Turkey), Vegetables, Grains, Tortillas, Potatos, Pita Pockets, Stir-fry, Salads, Breads, Finishing touches, Snacks & Lunch treats for kids, and finally Beverages. At the end of all recipes are suggestions to “balance your meal.” Many of these suggestions are other recipes in the cook book. There are also several microwave recipes throught the book. The tortilla recipes (Bean Burrito–micro & fast!) and pita recipes (Chicken Parmesan Pita)are especially good. The Chocolate Pudding (micro) recipe is a great after school snack. The bottom line is that my kids will eat almost everything I cook from this book, and I can’t say that about any other cook book I own.

Review by EmerysMomma:
Someone tell me, is instant rice, chopped frozen broccoli and CHEESE WHIZ really healthy? If so, I have been doing family meals all wrong!

The book does have some so-so recipes, but they aren’t anything that I cant come up with on my own. There are no pictures which makes searching it as exciting as watching paint dry. It is just a major disappointment. I think people who would benefit from this book are people who tend to do fast-food or frozen food a lot, because these recipes are very easy and quick and a whole lot better then a happy meal. But for me, who loves to cook for the family, its just too boring and doesn’t deliver on the healthy aspect.

Pros: Quick easy recipes

Has suggestions how to balance the meal (the key to a healthy dinner)

Recipes are much better then fast food

Cons: Not so healthy sometimes

No pictures
