Healthy Meals for Less: Great-Tasting Simple Recipes Under a Serving Reviews

Review by D. B. Worthey:
I have used this book for several recipes this past week and my picky family has enjoyed every dish. I like how it has the price break down although I have not verified them yet. The dishes are healthy, flavorful and inexpensive. I feel as though my arsenal of meals to make for my family within budget has multiplied. I am a person that likes to try new things but hate cookbooks that call for ingredients I don’t have in my kitchen. The reason why I have not verified price is because I had all the ingredients in my kitchen already. No special trips to the store. This book is a must for every mom who would like to make from scratch, healthy, inexpensive meals

Review by B. Rose:
I have read her other books and a lot of the recipes were in a past book. I enjoyed the recipes, but I wanted more new material.

Diabetes & Heart Healthy Meals for Two

Twice as tasty . . . but with half the ingredients! People with diabetes want heart-healthy recipes, since heart disease strikes people with diabetes twice as often as the rest of the population. This book came in great condition. I love the recipes and the fact that you are only cooking for two…which means two meals for us single people. They are tasty and easy to create!! Worth purchasing.

Review by Elizabeth A. Chrastka:
This cookbook is a wonderful resource for anyone with diabetic or cardiac issues. The nutritional information is spot-on for two people, no guessing how much is a serving or how many calories or carbs. This is the best book of its kind that I’ve seen.

American Heart Association Healthy Family Meals: 150 Recipes Everyone Will Love Reviews

Review by s’wonderful s’marvelous:
I actually came across this book at the library. I love to check out cookbooks at the library to try out before purchasing them. There have been more times that I’ve purchased cookbooks that turned out to be a flop. But in this case, every recipe I tried was great!

Our whole family loved the recipes. I have picky kids and they were content with the recipes I tried. The Chicken Parmesan was so easy and so tasty. So was the Blueberry Crisp.

One of the things I liked about this cookbook was that not only did it include the nurtrition facts per serving (calories and fat content) but it also included ideas as to how to make it a meal. How many times have you made something and tried to figure out what to pair with it? For example, on the chicken parmesan, the book suggested to pair it with whole wheat spaghetti and a spinach salad. For the fiesta cobb salad, the book said to make it with whole wheat breadsticks, and bananas combined with unsweetened frozen peaches. What great ideas!

I loved this cookbook so much that I ended up buying it. It’s great to have a cookbook dedicated to making families healthier. And it actually has recipes that families would love. You won’t be disappointed!

Review by Sacramento Book Review:
If your New Year’s resolution includes being healthier, there’s a new cookbook to help start you on your way. //Healthy Family Meals// provides basic recipes that will improve the way you eat. The book covers every meal of the day, including snacks and desserts. Because it’s put out by the American Heart Association, they want you to succeed. So they’ve included chapters with meals that are easy, fast, and, in some cases, provide enough leftovers for a second night. They also include recipes you can make with the kids. After all, eating healthfully should be a family affair.

Don’t think that you’ll have to substitute health for flavor. Recipes include Bean & Potato Enchiladas, Popeye’s Special Lasagna, Crisp Catfish Fingers (baked instead of fried), and even Chicken Nuggets. Instead of removing flavor, the recipes remove unnecessary fats, salts, and cholesterol. Ingredients call for extra lean cuts of meat, no-salt-added canned goods, and plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. You’ll also find lightened recipes for classic favorites like tuna casserole, chicken pot pie, and even cheesecake.

For standard recipes that are easy on the heart and full of flavor, pick up a copy of //Healthy Family Meals//.

The Weeknight Survival Cookbook: How to Make Healthy Meals in 10 Minutes Reviews

Review by hilarius-bookbinder:
Right this minute I can tell you what I’m having for dinner every night for the rest of the week. Not only that, the ingredients are already in my house because a weekly shopping list is included in the book! And the meals are super quick to make, healthy (the author’s a nutritionist) and filling. A life-saver for this single guy.

Review by :
I am very pleased with this book: it is simple, the recipes can easily be modified, and best of all: there are shopping lists. I find that a large part of my meal executing woes are caused by not having time to plan and make lists. The foods are very middle of the road: not too gourmet, not too many processed foods. A couple meals a week are vegetarian, but carb watchers can add a fish fillet or chicken or something to the meal easily. Lots of veggies are included too. After purchasing a similar book that ended up suggesting I make “duck tacos” this book is a winner. Tip: take it to an office supply store and have the cover laminated and have it spiral-bound for easy use.

Pillsbury Fast & Healthy Cookbook: Delicious family meals in 30 minutes or less Reviews

Review by A. Adair:
We’ve made about 15 – 20 different recipes from this cookbook, and with the exception of only one meal, all have been delicious. This is an awesome cookbook. The recipes are simple, use a lot of ingredients that you normally already have at home, and use a lot of vegetables. Tastes great, and is also very healthy. The meals can all be prepared quickly. This is the first time we’ve been so impressed with everything in a cookbook, and we love it so much we keep going to it, trying a new meal once or twice a week.

The Healthy Baby Meal Planner: Mom-Tested, Child-Approved Recipes for Your Baby and Toddler Reviews

Review by Julie A. Hager:
I would not recommend this book. First, in several recipes Karmel is adding sugar or maple syrup. One reason people make their own food is to avoid just that! Secondly, she has a recipe introducing peanut butter at age 6-9 months. Some experts will say not to feed peanut butter, peanuts, or even peanut oil until atleast 3 years of age; while others say the baby should be atleast 1 year. I must say 6-9 months is very early for such a highly allergic food. A reaction from peanuts is quick and could be deadly! Another thing that was troublesome was she doesn’t mention that feeding foods like spinach and carrots can cause a form of anemia in children. I guess it is due to nitrates in the soil. Baby food companies are aware of this and test. Other baby food books I have read recommend you wait on making (and buying them already prepared) these ingrediants until a certain age. The American Academy of Pediatrics will back this one up. The book is pretty, it is simple to read. But I think the author needs to continue her research.

Review by Bookworm in WI:
I just started feeding my 5 month old daughter “solids” and wanted to do it in a healthy way. So I ordered this book and Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron. This definitely is a more attractive package, with very interesting looking recipes I will try when my baby gets older. However, based on the research I have done on the subject, it doesn’t sit right with me that some of her recipes for four- to six-month-olds include seasonings such as mint, peppercorns, cinnamon, and sugar. Also, the title of that chapter is “Four to Six Months and Weaning”. As a nursing mom who plans to continue at least until my daughter is a year old, this sounds to me as if the author is pushing to get babies off of milk and on to solids as soon as possible. As stated before, the recipes for older kids (and adults) look very interesting–they should–the author is a Cordon Bleu graduate! But I will be getting the majority of my homemade baby food info from the other book mentioned in this review.

Quick & Healthy Recipes and Ideas: For people who say they don’t have time to cook healthy meals, 3rd Edition Reviews

Review by :
This cookbook, designed for those who don’t have time to cook healthy meals, has many recipes with few ingredients that are quick cooking, low in fat, and taste great. The bonus is that ingredients in the book are familiar. You don’t have to trot off to health food stores or specialty stores for a critical ingredient.

Review by :
This book has really helped me to learn to cook quick and healthy meals. For those with diabetes, it lists food exchanges and ingredient modifications to allow us to work within common restrictions. I specifically liked the practical and down-to-Earth recipes. I found the recipes less esoteric and fussy than in the most popular cookbooks written for people with diabetes. Generally, most recipes feature ingredients that one is likely to have on hand. It compares favorably with many cookbooks in this regard. Suggestions for incorporating recipes into balanced meals were also helpful. This is a great turn-your-health-around book that can help you stay away from drive-thru windows for all time if are prepared to give it a fair chance.

Betty Crocker The 300 Calorie Cookbook: 300 tasty meals for eating healthy every day (Betty Crocker Books) Reviews

Review by A. Chandler:
Everytime I swear I won’t cram another cookbook onto my bookshelf I leaf through something that seems to stand out among the other cookbooks I have, or is complete enough that it allows me to give away several cookbooks so that one can take its place.

This is one such cookbook.

Very extensive cookbook with around 300 recipes, it’s divided into the following categories:

Center of the Plate

Savory Skillet Meals

Casseroles and Pot Pies

Meatless Main Dishes

Sandwiches, Salads, and Pizzas

Soups, Stews, and Chilies

Slow Cooker Suppers

Grilling Good and Easy

30 Min or Less

Cooking for Two

Which is why I say it’s like having several cookbooks…if I’m in the mood to grill, I can pull this out and do it with fewer calories, if I have limited time, it still has recipes for me, if I don’t want leftovers I use the cooking for two section, and I love the slow cooker suppers for those days when I want to throw some things into a pot in the morning and come home to a hot cooked meal, making me feel like my private chef slaved all day to have dinner ready and waiting! :-)

Here are a few examples of some of the recipes. I’ve found them to include easy-to-locate ingredients and be family pleasers so that the rest of the house doesn’t even have to know it’s “diet” food since they tend to be good comfort foods:

Honey Glazed chicken breasts

Baked Oregano Chicken (this is a great one at only 180 calories)

Smothered Cajun Pork Chops

Beef and Peppers with Biscuits

Cheese Enchiladas

Philly Steak Casserole

Cheese Filled Tortellini Soup

Black Bean Taco Salad

Baked Chicken and Rice with Autumn Veggies

Country French Beef Stew

Chicken and Dumplings

Creamy Crabmeat Au Gratin

Tex Mex Scrambled Eggs

Cajun Oven Fried Trout

Grilled Pizza

Tex Mex Meat Loaf

There are also lots of ethnic dishes thrown in if you, for example, are in the mood for Chinese food, Indian food, etc. And the meatless maindishes will make even a hearty carnivore forget what’s missing.

This book, unlike most of my diet cookbooks, contains FULL nutritionals, even the protein, sodium etc. If you are following Weight Watchers you’ll know the fat and fiber of every dish going in.

The instructions are super simple. I cook all the time but even if you have only made Kraft mac and cheese up til now, you’ll not skip a beat.

NEGATIVES: I try to leave negatives on any review even if I love something since nothing is perfect but this book is jam packed with recipes, many with calories even in the one hundreds and they are easy to prepare, healthy, and tasty and have full nutritionals. That’s an A+ cookbook for me. I’f I had to say something others might not like, I might say it doesn’t contain photos for all recipes (it does have several photos, just not for all) but bear in mind the book is already at almost 400 pages with its tips and recipes so you might not fit it into your cookbook holder if got any bigger. :-)

I love this one. It’s both rare and well-done.

p.s. My calorie goal when I am dieting is 1250 calories per day. (This was scientifically figured out for me with a bodybugg. I’m a weight loss coach.) I burn 1950 calories per day usually in just normal activities so this deficit enables me to lose well if I also increase my activity( a little over 2 lbs per week) since a deficit of 3,500 calories equals a loss of one pound. (Your body uses fat stores for energy when it has a deficit.) Your calorie needs will vary of course based upon your height and weight and activity but there are several places online that you can get an estimate of what your body uses in order to figure out the deficit needed for weight loss even without a bodybugg. (All weight loss is, afterall, is taking in less calories than you burn.) This is great if you want to eat fresh food yet measure exactly what you are taking in as well.

But I’m not always on a diet. And to be honest, I use this book even when I am not on a diet. I like the recipes. I just get to eat more!

This keeps me satisfied and it’s more of a food change than a diet.

Review by Jessica Hankle:
My husband and I are eating 6 meals a day at 300 calories each meal and we were very impressed with this book. I am not a good cook by any means (I’ve been known to burn water) but this book is extremely simplistic. The pages are large print and the recipies are extremely dummyproof. The negative about this book is that every recipe does not have a picture.. There are a few grouped picture page sets that label the recipe page but they are not side by side. Every recipie that I tried in this book so far has become my favorite. Def a good purchase!

Quick Meals for Healthy Kids and Busy Parents: Wholesome Family Recipes in 30 Minutes or Less From Three Leading Child Nutrition Experts Reviews

Review by Wendy:
I must admit I’m a cook book junkie–always at the library and book stores looking for healthy, “kid-friendly” recipes. I purchased this book on a whim five years ago, and would rate it my all time favorite “family” cookbook. Recipes are in chapters: Soups, Chicken & Fish, Ground Beef (Turkey), Vegetables, Grains, Tortillas, Potatos, Pita Pockets, Stir-fry, Salads, Breads, Finishing touches, Snacks & Lunch treats for kids, and finally Beverages. At the end of all recipes are suggestions to “balance your meal.” Many of these suggestions are other recipes in the cook book. There are also several microwave recipes throught the book. The tortilla recipes (Bean Burrito–micro & fast!) and pita recipes (Chicken Parmesan Pita)are especially good. The Chocolate Pudding (micro) recipe is a great after school snack. The bottom line is that my kids will eat almost everything I cook from this book, and I can’t say that about any other cook book I own.

Review by EmerysMomma:
Someone tell me, is instant rice, chopped frozen broccoli and CHEESE WHIZ really healthy? If so, I have been doing family meals all wrong!

The book does have some so-so recipes, but they aren’t anything that I cant come up with on my own. There are no pictures which makes searching it as exciting as watching paint dry. It is just a major disappointment. I think people who would benefit from this book are people who tend to do fast-food or frozen food a lot, because these recipes are very easy and quick and a whole lot better then a happy meal. But for me, who loves to cook for the family, its just too boring and doesn’t deliver on the healthy aspect.

Pros: Quick easy recipes

Has suggestions how to balance the meal (the key to a healthy dinner)

Recipes are much better then fast food

Cons: Not so healthy sometimes

No pictures
