The Good Cookie: Over 250 Delicious Recipes from Simple to Sublime

Here is a book that no self-respecting cookie-lover can resist. The Good Cookie shares a fresh and tantalizing selection of 250 recipes from around the world–complete with expert instruction on how to make them. From rugged Cranberry Orange Nut Bars and irresistible Bittersweet Chocolate Biscotti to sophisticated Chocolate-Filled Almond Hearts, readers bake their way through basic drop cookies, beautiful hand-formed cookies, delectable sandwich cookies, complex decorator cookies, and more. Each recipe features background information on the cookie’s history, technique, ingredients, and more. Chockful of information on decorating, wrapping, and shipping cookies for gift-giving, as well as tips on freezing for make-ahead planning, the book also includes a comprehensive list of sources for basic equipment, out-of-the-way places for finding cookie stamps, as well as tips on where to locate hard-to-find ingredients and equipment. There are thousands of cookie recipes out there already, and probably hundreds of cookie recipe books. What makes The Good Cookie different, and worth making room for, is Tish Boyle. Food editor of the magazines Chocolatier and Pastry Art & Design, Boyle uses her experience as a pastry chef to update, improve, and choose between all those thousands of recipes for classic and best-loved cookies. She also includes recipes contributed by other excellent pastry chefs she’s met, and for the remainder she relies on her own creative genius. With over 250 recipes to choose from, Boyle makes the task much easier with mouth-watering introductions that describe in detail the appearance, texture, and taste of every cookie. The chapters are organized by technique, but the recipes are reorganized in an ingenious index by occasion or use: Ship Well, For Grown-Ups, Over-the-Top Chocolate, Bake Sale Bonanza, and the like. You’ll find favorites such as Russian Tea Cakes, Lattice-Topped

The Good Cookie: Over 250 Delicious Recipes from Simple to Sublime Reviews

Review by Jo Ann Peitzmeier:
The Good Cookie is the best cookbook I own because every recipe I have tried has been fantastic! (I agree with another reviewer – the chocolate chip cookie recipe is the best ever; I just made another batch today). There is a marvellously wide range of types (bar, refrigerator, decorator, drop, cut-out, etc) and flavors. And there are even cookies from around the world, from fortune cookies to hamentaschen to biscotti (several flavors) to ANZAC cookies to various British cookies. The recipe layout is visually pleasing and easy to follow. There are several pages of color photos to get your saliva glands and desire to bake really going. And every cookie I have tried has been perfectly delectable. I really love this cookbook and couldn’t give it enough praise. Comprehensive, easy to use, nice to look at, and delicious. It is the best cookbook I’ve ever bought!

Review by :
Maida Heatter, a long-trusted name in baking, said “Happiness is baking cookies — especially when they are as delicious as all these are.” I cannot agree with her more. Because of time constraints, I tend toward the easier recipes in this book, and there are so many to choose from. My pregnant cousin does not allow me to visit her anymore without Tish’s Chocolate Chunk Cookies; my children finish a dish before I can even get to them. For fans of wonderfully rich, chocolate-y cookies, make sure you try this recipe first! For a great after school treat, be sure to try the Classic Vanilla Sugar Cookies. You can taste each of the simple ingredients that is part of this recipe, and your children will gladly help you sprinkle the coarse sugar. There are many, many more recipes to try, and they range from simple to sophisticated and sweet to savory. In the end, one needs only one good cookie. But it is nice to know that, with this book, you will have many more favorites from which to choose!

The Gourmet Cookie Book: The Single Best Recipe from Each Year 1941-2009

For this stunning collection, the editors of Gourmet delved deep into their archives and selected the most delicious cookie for each year of the magazine’s sixty-eight-year existence. After marathon testing sessions and winnowing from thousands of recipes?many sent in by readers?they chose an amazing array, from the almond-scented French-style Cajun Macaroons, from the magazine’s beginnings in 1941, through Mocha Toffee Bars (1971), to the contemporary Glittering Lemon Sandwich Cookies. The enticing assortment includes  Cookies of every type and description, from the homey (Aunt Sis’s Strawberry Tart Cookies) to the exotic (Grand Marnier-Glazed Pain d’Epice Cookies), including balls, bars, refrigerator cookies, drop cookies, even deep-fried cookie confections.  Cookies from around the world: from Dutch Jan Hagels to Irish oatmeal sandwich cookies filled with cream and Irish whiskey, to Scandinavian Rosettes.  Dozens of Christmas cookies: Old-Fashioned Christmas Butter Cookies, star-shaped Moravian White Cookies, Chocolate Peppermint Bar Cookies. Printed exactly as they originally appeared in the magazine, with abundant tips and recipe notes from Gourmet’s test kitchen, and with headnotes describing their cultural context, the recipes present a fascinating bite-by-bite history of how our appetites evolved.

1001 Cookie Recipes: The Ultimate A-To-Z Collection of Bars, Drops, Crescents, Snaps, Squares, Biscuits, and Everything That Crumbles Reviews

Review by :
I am absolutely amazed that this book was published with the number of typos in the recipes. I choose 7 recipes randomly from throughout this book and of those 7, six of them had HUGE ingredient typos. For example: 2 1/4 tablespoons of flour instead of 2 1/4 CUPS! 1 teaspoon of liquid ingredients to 4 1/4 cups of dry! I will NEVER use this cookbook again as I cannot trust ANY of the recipes to be correct. Yes it’s a “pretty” book. Yes it has a large number of recipes. However, if the author/editor and publisher are not going to test the recipes or pay attention to the accuracy of the final galleys, then it would have been better NOT to publish it at all. Not only did I waste my money on the purchase of this book, but I also wasted my money on the ingredients for the 7 recipes I choose.

Review by :
I, too, have noticed the homogeneity present in this book and, at first, was disappointed. However, in comparing several of the “same” recipes, I found them to be completely different. I am, for the most part, satisfied with the book. There are some typos and one has to wonder how that got by the editor. My one suggestion, and I cannot understate the importance of this: substitute butter for vegetable shortening. You will have both better flavor and consistency. And avoid the Norske Kroner recipe–there is NO body to the dough and it is impossible to handle.

Cake Mix Cookies: More Than 175 Delectable Cookie Recipes That Begin With a Box of Cake Mix

Imagine a kitchen warm witih the smells of sweet vanilla, fragrant cinnamon, and fresh butter. On the kitchen counter is a cooling rack piled high with fresh-from-the-oven delights filled with chocolate chips and crunchy pecans. Ah, the age-old comfort of cookies. Next imagine that each of the yummy treats began with a convenient box of cake mix. That’s right, a standard 18.25-ounce box of cake mix is the secret to some of the tastiest, simplest, and most irresistable cookies imaginable. With a few extra ingredients, turns of a spoon, and whirrs of a mixer, cake mix can make anyone a prize cookie baker. Like Cookie Dough Delights and Brownie Mix Bliss, Cake-Mix Cookies is the first cookbook of its kind. Although several cake-mix cookbooks exist, including the bestselling Cake Mix Doctor books and 101 Things to Do with a Cake Mix, they offer only a small number of cookie and bar recipes and overlap one another. By contrast, Cake-Mix Cookies is filled with an array of more than 175 drop, shaped, filled, and bar cookie options for every occasion. Numerous all-American favorites are used as starting points: chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, jam thumbprints, and dark chocolate brownies. There are also new takes on classic European cookies; for example, crunchy Italian biscotti, tender French madeleines, and rich Viennese teacakes. Finally, a healthy dose of new cookies has been created for the book: blackberry-lemon buttermilk bars, triple chocolate chess squares, and chocolate blackout. Cake-Mix Cookies contains the broadest range of new recipes for cookies and bars that is unavailable elsewhere. And while it capitalizes on the popularity of baking with cake mixes, it has its own unique niche on the home cook’s shelf.

Cake Mix Cookies: More Than 175 Delectable Cookie Recipes That Begin With a Box of Cake Mix Reviews

Review by Ellen Westing:
I suppose you could call me the cowardly baker, because, though I love to cook, I often take shortcuts with baking. I’ve made quite a few cake mix cookies over the years, and it’s much like the doctored cake mix cakes–the basic ones may taste like a cake mix, but the well-doctored ones don’t.

This collection has an inspiring number of flavor combinations and cookie varieties. I was hopeful when I ordered it that it would live up to the promise of containing many options different from the cake mix cookie recipes that are already out there. Well, it does, and then some. The Viennese tea cakes are simply delicious, and so easy–a can of almond filling is the secret ingredient. They took about 3 minutes to whip up. I took the plunge and made the classic madeleines, too–a bit of a stretch for me since I had to whip some egg whites, but that was the only fussy part and they turned out buttery, golden and delicious.

This has fast become a favorite on my cookbook shelf.

Review by Maya K.:
I and three other women made the desserts for a community Thanksgiving fundraising supper this weekend and made multiple bars from this book including the pumpkin gooey chess squares, pumpkin pie bars, triple chocolate gooey bars, pecan pie bars, premier cranberry cream cheese bars and the blackberry-lemon crumb bars. The recipe directions were excellent, the results were perfect, and people were beside themselves trying to get second and third helpings (we thought we had made too much but we in fact ran out).

Really a useful book and I was delighted by the wide range of recipes. The bars are definitely stars but I’m looking forward to trying some of the biscotti, madeleine and thumbprint cookies, too.

The Ultimate Shortcut Cookie Book: 745 Scrumptious Recipes That Start with Refrigerated Cookie Dough, Cake Mix, Brownie Mix or Ready-to-Eat Cereal Reviews

Review by T. Tran:
The recipes are good, require basic ingredients that you can find in any supermarket, and easy to follow. However, if you already owned Camilla Saulsbury’s previous books :Cookie dough delights, No bake cookie, Brownie mix bliss,Cake mix cookies ( like I do), don’t waste you money buying this book because it has the same (most to all) recipes from those 4 books.. The only difference is this book has some pictures and is a hardcover.. Otherwise, this is a good book to buy if you never owned any of the mentioned books above

Review by Christina Weinstein:
I love to bake, particularly cookies, of every variety. I purchased Camilla’s Cake Mix Cookies book a few years ago, and it’s dog-eared, stained (with chocolate!), and pretty much falling apart now because I’ve made her cookies again and again. That’s what encouraged me to purchase this book and I’m so glad I did. I am a huge fan of her work, and love all of her appearances on the Food Network. She even included her ,000 winning spice cookie from the Ultimate Recipe Showdown at the front of the book (you have to make them; you’ll understand why a spice cookie won!)

I now have cookie recipes to last a lifetime and all the options–from classics to contemporary flavor ideas I had never dreamed of (like the Turkish Coffee Brownie Bars–OMG!!! They are so easy and beyond scrumptious)–make my head spin. Her flavor combinations are genius, and the recipes so easy to follow.

Every recipe I have tried so far has been top notch and unbelievably delicious. I was happy to find some new cake mix recipes thoughout–the Italian Meltaways and Maple Walnut Crisps were demolished in seconds by my office staff.

As always, Camilla has stellar tips for making cookie-baking perfect. I am so happy that this book has beautiful photos, the only thing that was missing from Camilla’s earlier books.

The Kids-Did-It! Cookie Bookie: A (fun) cookie-baking cookbook for kids, illustrated by kids! (Volume 1) Reviews

Review by Elizabeth Ganji:
I received this cookie bookie as a gift and have been raving about it ever since. Not only are the recipes fun, creative, and kid-friendly, the illustrations throughout the book were created by children! It is amazing the quality of art these children have produced, and I find myself thumbing through it repeatedly enjoying the vibrant color and cute designs the kids have come up with.

I plan to buy several more and attach them to baked goodies for Christmas presents this year for my friends with little ones. Will continue to be a great project for our rainy Northwest winters in the years to come! Highly recommend this book.

Review by Christopher Raser:

The Complete Baking Cookbook: 350 Recipes from Cookies and Cakes to Muffins and Pies Reviews

Review by Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Man:
A very practical cookbook with an easy-to-read format that clearly show the serving size for each recipe, a brief explanation of the origins of the recipes, precise listing of all the ingredients involved, detailed listing of the instructions about how to make it and some tips you can use to make the recipe as good as it can possibly be. There’s even an extremely educational look at some common cooking ingredients at the beginning of the book that will make anyone a better cook.

Review by R. Maung:
I baked a few pieces from this cookbook and it’s excellent!! I love the pictures (I’m quite visual person) and it’s rather comprehensive. The only thing is….it’s probably not for the health conscious, but then most dessert recipes aren’t exactly the most healthy foods, are they? Easy to follow instructions too.

101 Easy Peasy Cookie Recipes Reviews

Review by Sheena:
101 Easy Peasy Cookie Recipes is a compilation of simple cookie recipes that taste and look like they would’ve been baked by an experienced chef! Imagine showing up at an event with delicious cookies that took you all of 20 minutes to mix and bake! I AM IN LOVE!

Review by AM Coleman:
I could easily give 101 reasons why I love this book; each and every recipe. Mother- daughter team Lucinda and Heather Wallace have put together the most amazing little book of cookie recipes.

There’s no fluff, no history, no extras (which I miss a little) just recipes – delicious recipes!

I made four different batches of cookies from this book. I set out to make one from each section, but settled on one each. I made Caramel Apple Crisps from the Bar Cookies chapter and made a huge mistake – I thought I’d have time “later” to get a photo, but the cookies were gone before “later” came. We were all crazy about them, even my brother-in- law who stopped in for a visit.

Next was Oranges and Cream Cookies from the Drop Cookies chapter. Man, were these GOOD! If you’ve ever bought those canned orange rolls for breakfast, you know – the kind you make at home – these taste nearly identical to those.

Then I tried Chocolate Covered Cherry Cookies from the No-Bake chapter. My daughter, Megan, loves maraschino cherries and she was in Heaven with this one. Even my husband, who hates no-bake type cookies, really enjoyed these.

Lastly is the Shaped Cookies chapter from which I made Shortbread Raspberry Kisses. Truly delectable.

I have to say, I have a cookie cookbook form a very big-name baker and I have yet to make a recipe from it that actually turned out well. It was a huge disappointment for a book full of colorful photos. 101 Easy Peasy Cookie Recipes, on the other hand, hasn’t let me down one bit. None of the ingredients are exotic or hard-to-find. The baking methods are easy to follow, and the results are absolutely perfect!

My 6 year-old said it best. When asking why I was making all these cookies, I explained to her a book review and what went with that and then she said, “They make good cookies! I mean, they have good recipes!”
